This week’s High School Wrestler of the Week is John Birchmeier of Broad Run High School in Ashburn, Virginia. Birchmeier, a senior, took advantage of a rule instituted last year allowing high schoolers to compete in college opens and wrestled in this weekend’s Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open at Binghamton. The fourth-ranked high school heavyweight went 2-1 in the tournament and took second place, falling to college No. 10 Matt Voss of George Mason in the finals. Birchmeier, a Navy commit, picked up a fall over Thomas Ott of Navy in the quarterfinals at the 4:36 mark and then topped two-time NCAA qualifier, Antonio Pelusi of Franklin & Marshall 4-1 in the semifinals. He is a three-time Virginia state champion, a Beast of the East champion, Escape the Rock champion, and also a one-time state champion in cheerleading.
Congratulations to John Birchmeier, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week
