The Open Mat’s High School Wrestler of the Week Award goes to Brandon Cannon of Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Cannon, a freshman, came from completely off the radar to win the 106-pound division at Beast of the East. Though Cannon, a Colorado native, won Super 32 as a middle schooler, he was behind Daniel Sheen in the Sem lineup to start the season. With the Sem “starters” (Coach Scott Green says they have neither starters nor backups) at XCalibur this weekend, the rest of the squad went to Beast of the East. Cannon entered as the 23 seed. He opened with a major decision and then a round two tech over the 10 seed. In the round of 16, he notched an 11-0 major decision over the seventh seed. Brandon then upset second-seeded Mac Church, the No. 7 wrestler in the nation, 5-2 in the quarters. In the semis, Cannon ousted third-seeded Gabe Giampietro, ranked No. 15 nationally, 5-3. Finally, he took down fourth-seeded Tyler Vasquez of Delbarton 7-2 in sudden victory in the finals. Vasquez had previously upset Cadet world champion and the No. 1-ranked wrestlers in the country, Marc-Anthony McGowan, in the semis.
Congratulations to Brandon Cannon, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week.
