This week’s High School Wrestler of the Week award from The Open Mat goes to Caleb Henson of Woodland High School in Cartersville, Georgia. Only a sophomore, Caleb captured his first Georgia 5A state championship over the weekend, competing at 145 lbs. Henson is currently ranked seventh nationally at the weight class. In order to claim his state title, Caleb needed to go through an imposing opponent, Francis Morrissey (Veterans). Morrissey, an Appalachian State signee, was ranked 18th in the country at 152 lbs. Caleb had to go to sudden victory to notch a winning takedown in his 5-3 win over the senior Morrissey. The win by Henson prevented Morrissey from becoming a three-time Georgia state champ. It also capped off a perfect 43-0 season for the sophomore Henson. Caleb’s first three matches at the state meet all ended in first period falls.
The win over Morrissey was the second of the year for Caleb. He had bumped up to 152 lbs at the state Dual Meet Championships and helped lead Woodland to a team championship. Earlier this season, Henson earned a title at Florida’s Knockout Christmas Classic and came away with wins over Super 32 champion Bretli Reyna, an Iowa recruit, and Northern Iowa signee Ethan Basile.
Congratulations to Caleb Henson, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week.
