One of the top juniors in the country is off the board! Joshua Saunders (Christian Brothers College, MO), the seventh-ranked wrestler in the High School Class of 2020 has made his college choice, per TrackWrestling, and that school will be Cornell. In February, Saunders captured his third Missouri state championship while wrestling at 152 lbs. Earlier this season he was down at 138 pounds when he won the Walsh Ironman, the nation’s toughest in-season high school tournament. As a sophomore, Joshua was fourth at the Ironman. Though wrestled at 152 in the postseason it would be surprising to see Saunders that high in college, at least to start.
Saunders’ success is not limited to in-season folkstyle, he was a 2017 Cadet freestyle national champion and Greco-Roman runner-up in Fargo, the last time he competed at the event. This summer, after winning the Cadet World Team Trials, Joshua traveled to Zagreb, Croatia for the Cadet World Championships. He was then called as an injury replacement to wrestle in the Junior World Championships, as well.
Though it’s early, Cornell already has the makings of an excellent Class of 2020 with Saunders and #14 overall Greg Diakomihalis (Hilton, NY).
