Wrestling Recruiting News

TOM’s Recruiting News: August 4th, 2018

Though we have hit the dog days of summer, the recruiting season is as strong as ever. Understandably enough it’s hard to match last weeks news when top recruit Cohlton Schultz (Ponderosa, CO) made his college decision public, the notices of high schoolers committing to colleges continue to roll in. Here are some of the most notable wrestlers that have given verbals in the past few days.

Penn picked up a pair of quality recruits this week. The Quakers continue to tear up the recruiting trail; they currently have five wrestlers from the Class of 2019 who have given verbal commitments, to go along with a recruiting Class of 2018 that was ranked 13th in the nation. This week Coach Roger Reina’s staff added Joey Slackman (Commack, NY), who is currently ranked 15th in the country at 285 lbs. Slackman was a New York state runner-up last year, who though did not place in Fargo last month, still picked up four wins at the Junior Freestyle tournament. Also joining Slackman in the Quakers recruiting class of 2019 is Cam Connor (Kiski Area, PA). Cam is a two-time Pennsylvania state qualifier who finished seventh in the state in his most recent trip, wrestling at 145 lbs. Connor looks like he will wrestle either 149 or 157 for Penn. Both of these weight classes have multiple recruits from the Class of 2018, but very little coming back, concerning returners with experience so he will help fill a need at either weight.

A second Illinois high schooler has decided to stay home to wrestle in Champaign for the Fighting Illini, and this young man is 2016-17 state runner-up Domenic Zaccone. In 2017-18, Zaccone did not place at the state tournament, as he was in one of the most challenging brackets in the country. There were three other wrestlers ranked in the top ten nationally at his 120 lb weight class. Domenic also competed in the Junior Freestyle division at Fargo this summer. He went 3-2 at 126 lbs. Zaccone joins Junior Freestyle National Champion Luke Luffman (220 pounds) already a commit in the Illinois Class of 2019.

Lehigh continues to get commitments from all over the East Coast. The Mountain Hawks already have verbals from Connor McGonagle (New Hampshire) and Louden Haga (West Virginia), now they have another from Paul Watkins (North Forsyth, GA). Watkins is a three-time Georgia placewinner, finished second as a freshman and then third in each of the last two seasons. In 2017, Paul was fourth at NHSCA Sophomore Nationals and eight in Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals in Fargo. Watkins competed at 126 lbs this year in Fargo, though he did not place. He will join what looks to be a crowded group of lower-weights for Lehigh at either 125 or 133 lbs, as they have recruited well at these weights the past couple of years.

Bucknell is on the board with their second recruit from the Class of 2019, Mason McCready (Hollidaysburg, PA). Mason was an eighth-place finisher at 182 lbs in Pennsylvania’s AAA division last season in his first time qualifying for the event. He will join Scott Joll, a placewinner for Belle Vernon, PA, in the Bison’s Class of 2019.
