Top recruits Josh Shields, Brandon James make verbal commitments

By Jason Bryant

Two major verbal commitments came in on Saturday as Josh Shields of Franklin Regional (Pa.) and Brandon James of Perry Meridian (Ind.) made their college intentions public.

Shields informed TheOpenMat.com of his verbal commitment to Arizona State. The 152-pound state runner-up will start the season ranked second in the nation and is a three-time state placewinner. He’s won the PowerADE twice and has placed at both the Walsh Ironman and FloNationals. He joins high school teammate Josh Maruca, who committed earlier this month to Arizona State and new coach Zeke Jones.

James announced his commitment to coach Steve Martin and the Old Dominion Monarchs. James is a three-time state placewinner and will start the year ranked ninth at 138 pounds by TheOpenMat.com and projects as a 141-pounder. James was a state runner-up in one-class Indiana this past season.
