Yesterday Cornell received a verbal commitment from one of the top big men in the nation, Bergen Catholic, New Jersey’s Jacob Cardenas. Currently ranked second at 195 lbs, Jacob put together an excellent junior season in 2017-18 which vaulted him up the rankings as the 33rd overall wrestler in the Class of 2019. Last year Cardenas won the Journeyman Fall Classic and was a runner-up at both the Beast of the East and the Doc Buchanan, before capturing his first New Jersey state championship. He has been busy since the high school season has concluded winning NHSCA Junior Nationals, FloNationals and he was fifth at the UWW Cadet Freestyle World Team Trials. Last weekend, Jacob went 7-0 wrestling freestyle at the Junior Duals.

Cardenas projects as a 197 lber at the next level for Cornell. At this point, it doesn’t appear to be a pressing need with All-American Ben Darmstadt entering his sophomore season. Head Coach Rob Koll has already done a great job with the Class of 2019, as Jacob is the fifth verbal commitment for the Big Red. He joins top-ranked 170 lber Julian Ramirez, third-ranked 152 lbs Colton Yapoujian, seventh-ranked 160 lber Mason Reiniche and ninth-ranked 126 lber Phillip Moomey, who have already committed to Cornell.
