This evening TOM’s top-ranked 120 lber Lucas Byrd (LaSalle, OH) announced via social media that he will be attending the University of Illinois this fall. Initially, Byrd had signed with Maryland, however, after the departure of previous head coach Kerry McCoy, Lucas was released from his letter of intent. He reopened the recruitment process and was down to the Fighting Illini and Penn State. Byrd was the highest ranked recruit from the Class of 2019 without a home, coming in as the #25 overall senior in the latest rankings, which were released yesterday.

Prior to his senior season, Byrd won the Super 32 at 120 lbs.  In the regular season, Lucas made the Walsh Ironman finals for a second consecutive season. He capped off his high school career by winning his second state title in Ohio’s largest classification. As a junior, he was only the second state champion in school history. Byrd projects as a 125 lber for Illinois, which will come in handy as their starter for the 2018-19 season, three-time NCAA qualifier Travis Piotrowski will be a senior next season. He will be the second top 50 recruit from the Class of 2019 to sign with Illinois, joining #41 Luke Luffman.
