One day after receiving their first verbal commitment from the high school Class of 2021, Chris Bono’s Wisconsin Badgers got their second. Two-time Illinois state champion Dean Hamiti Jr of Joliet Catholic, Academy has committed to join the Badgers after his high school graduation in 2021. Yesterday’s verbal was from Hayden Copass also of Illinois. Like Copass, Hamiti Jr was a U16 freestyle national champion this summer in Fargo. To earn his stop sign, Hamiti Jr pinned Georgia’s Matthew Singleton on the raised mat in the 145 lbs finals. Dean started to receive national attention this spring after he took fourth place at the Cadet World Team Trials in freestyle at 65 kg. Currently, he is ranked 30th overall in the Class of 2021; however, with his recent success, that ranking could improve.
Hamiti Jr is projected to land in the middleweights for the Badgers, at either 149 or 157 lbs. This continues a hot streak for the Wisconsin staff on the recruiting trail, as Saturday they received a verbal from Joseph Zargo (Bergen Catholic, NJ) the fourth-ranked 145lber in the nation. Copass, the seventh-ranked wrestler in the Class of 2021, gave his verbal Sunday afternoon. Wisconsin is now the only school to have multiple commitments from the Class of 2021.
