The battle to be six-time world or Olympic team member Tervel Dlagnev's successor is on at 125 kg. Former Lehigh standout Zach Rey has been a consistent runner-up to Dlagnev in recent years, making one appearance at the World Championships when the boss of the weight class was injured. Without Dlagnev in the picture, Rey has to believe it is his time, but the emergence of Nick Gwiazdowski, a two-time NCAA champion from NC State, has put that in peril. At first, it seemed that Rey might hold of Gwiazdowski. He beat him at last year's Olympic Trials, 4-2, in the semi-finals and it was fair to wonder if Rey's rock-solid defense was Gwiazdowski's kryptonite. However, by the time the US Open rolled around, Gwiazdowski had been able to focus on freestyle completely for a year and it showed. He beat both of the wrestlers who had taken him out at the Olympic Trials, seeing off Dom Bradley, 6-4, and then finally beating Rey, 3-2, to earn the bye to the final series.
