Today, Beat the Streets New York announced at their upcoming Grapple at the Garden event on May 6th, four-time World and Olympic Champion Jordan Burroughs would face 2008 Olympian and current UFC superstar Ben Askren at 79 kg. There had been rumored surrounding a potential matchup between the two for over a week now and the signing confirms that it will actually take place. Both are two-time undefeated NCAA champions and Hodge Trophy winners, with Askren winning the award twice. It is an interesting contrast in styles as Askren has been known for his funk and pinning ability, while Burroughs is famous for his double legs and reattacks. During Askren’s limited time on the freestyle circuit, his scrambling ability and funk was slightly nullified.
This is the second announced matchup of the event, the first will be between a pair of New Jersey natives at 70 kg, with James Green and Anthony Ashnault. Green is the returning world team representative at the weight class and a two-time world medalist. Ashnault just concluded his career at Rutgers and finished as a four-time All-American and NCAA champion. These matches will take place at the Hulu Theater with the main portion scheduled to take place at 6 pm.
