Today on social media, Kyle Dake announced that he had suffered an injury which required surgery and will not be able to compete in Final X this Saturday, June 8th on the campus of Rutgers University. Unlike David Taylor, who will miss the entire year, he has asked USA Wrestling for a wrestle-off at a later date. The date/time for the wrestle-off at 79 kg has not been confirmed or made public yet. Since Kyle is a returning world medalist, he was allowed to make such a request. Last year at Final X Bethlehem, Helen Maroulis had to pull out due to her complications from a concussion and had her series with Alex Hedrick delayed. The bylaws set by USA Wrestling required that he provide 48 hours notice in writing and a doctor’s note which supports the request.
The 2018 World Champion, Dake, will take on former Oklahoma State Hodge Trophy Winner, Alex Dieringer who has run through the rest of the competition domestically and even internationally in 2019. The pair last met in the finals of the 2018 US Open, where Dake won a one-point decision. Whenever the match is rescheduled, it will be in a best-of-three format, as well.
