January, one of the busiest months of the women’s college wrestling season has concluded, which means it is time to recognize TOM’s Women’s College Wrestler of the Month. As always, there were many deserving lady-scrappers; however, January’s wrestler of the month is Koral Sugiyama from Campbellsville University. The three-time All-American from Pocatello, Idaho ran the gauntlet in January, going a perfect 15-0, including four wins via pin and eight wins via technical fall. Overall, in the 11 matches that she did not end by pin, she outscored her opponents 123-26.
Sugiyama kicked off the month by going 4-0 at the NWCA National Duals with a pin and four technical falls. She also brought back 123-pound titles at the Tornado Open and the Bearcat Open. Between the two tournaments, she went a combined 8-0 with three technical falls and two pins, including a pin over 10th-ranked Alexia Ward (McKendree). Sugiyama also went 3-0 in duals for the month. Additionally, in January, she also earned Mid-South Conference Women’s Wrestler of the Week honors for the first time in her illustrious career. Sugiyama is currently the ninth-ranked wrestler at 123-pounds in the most recent Women’s College Wrestling Association (WCWA) rankings. She will be seeking her fourth All-American honors at the WCWA National Championships that are less than a week away.
Congratulations to Koral Sugiyama from all of us here at The Open Mat on her outstanding performances and being our Women’s College Wrestler of the Month for January!
