Maryland adds graduate transfer Nevills

By Maryland Sports Information

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland wrestling head coach Alex Clemsen announced the signing of heavyweight graduate transfer Seth Nevills on Sunday.

"With the graduation of Jaron Smith and the unfortunate medical retirement of Garrett Kappes, our program was in need of an elite heavyweight and Seth Nevills is just that," Clemsen said. "He will be pursuing a graduate degree and will help us continue to elevate Terps Wrestling. We are excited to welcome Seth and his wife Arisa to College Park. I know everyone who supports our program will love our new closer!"

Nevills spent his first four seasons at Penn State University, amassing a 22-7 record in that time, including a 13-4 mark in dual meets. He brings 12 total wins over Big Ten opponents to College Park, including ones over NCAA Qualifiers Tate Orndorff (Ohio State) and Christian Lance (Nebraska). As a true freshman, Nevills won both the Mat-Town and Wilkes Open. He was also a member of the Penn State football team for the first semester in the 2021-22 season.

Prior to Penn State, Nevills, a Clovis, CA native, competed at Clovis High School where he was a four-year varsity wrestling captain. He compiled a 169-1 prep school record en route to four straight California state championships. Clovis High School is also where incoming freshman Dario Lemus starred for the past four years.

Nevills has three brothers, all of whom wrestled in college; oldest brother, Zach, at Stanford, older brother, Nick, who was an All-American at Penn State, and older brother, A.J.

Nevills was FloWrestling's tenth-ranked recruit in the nation when he committed to the Nittany Lions in 2017. He will immediately fill the closer role left by the graduation of former eighth-year stalwart Jaron Smith.
