All-Americans Franek, Caliendo headed to Iowa

Iowa added a pair of All-American middleweights from North Dakota State on Friday.

Jared Franek and Michael Caliendo announced their commitment to the Hawkeyes. Both entered the transfer portal last month after their head coach Roger Kish left NDSU to become the head coach at Oklahoma.

Franek is a four-time NCAA qualifier, reaching the round of 12 in 2021 and 2022 before placing fourth at the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at 157 pounds. He amassed a career record of 92-20 while at NDSU.

"The last month has brought about a lot of change and tough decisions," Franek wrote on Instagram. "After giving NDSU everything I had for the last 5 years, I entered the transfer portal with the intention of putting myself in the best position possible to win a national title. With that being said, I have decided to spend my last year at the University of Iowa. Special thanks to my coaches, teammates, and fans at NDSU for all the support over the years. Excited to get to work!"

Caliendo, an Illinois native, is coming off a redshirt freshman campaign in which he compiled a 29-5 record and placed seventh at the NCAAs at 165 pounds.

"After a recent coaching change at NDSU I have decided to continue my wrestling career at the University of Iowa," Caliendo wrote on Instagram.
