PHILADELPHIA -- A standout wrestler for the Pennsylvania Regional Training Center (PRTC), Tyler Berger will join the University of Pennsylvania wrestling coaching staff as an assistant coach this year. The announcement was made recently by Penn head coach Roger Reina.

"Tyler brings a wealth of high-level experience, both at the NCAA and Olympic levels as a competitor," said Reina, who enters the sixth season of his second stint as Penn's head coach. "He has tremendous expertise across both styles, along with a natural intensity and the heart of a servant leader. We are delighted to have Tyler on board this year to advance Penn wrestling's national climb."

"I am very excited to join the Penn wrestling coaching staff," said Berger. "My goal is to be a positive leader and mentor for these young men. I am here to serve them in whatever way they need in order to help them accomplish their goals. The culture in this wrestling room is contagious and I can't wait to watch this team compete. It's going to be a great year."

As a PRTC Senior Olympic Level athlete, Berger won the 70kg title at the 2023 US Open in Las Vegas in late April. That sent him to Final X in June where he wrestled World silver medalist Zain Retherford for a spot on the World Team, coming up short in the best-of-3 series but in the process making the US National Team for the second straight year.

Prior to his move to Philadelphia to train with PRTC, Berger trained one year at the California RTC, and before that he spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Nebraska. In that position, he worked with all weight classes on the team and assisted with the Nebraska Wrestling Training Center and summer camps.

A three-time All-America wrestler at Nebraska, Berger racked up a career record of 116-32 as a collegiate wrestler for the Huskers. As a senior in 2018-19, Berger posted an overall mark of 28-4 including a 16-1 dual record. He also was a finalist at both the NCAA Championships the Big Ten Championships.

Berger was an All-America for the first time as a sophomore in 2016, as he placed fifth at the NCAA Championships and also took third at the Big Ten Championships. As a junior, Berger earned All-America honors following a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. He amassed a regular-season mark of 24-3 (16-1 dual record) and placed fourth at the Big Ten Championships.

Berger excelled off the mat, as well. He was a two-time member of the NWCA All-Academic Team and a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. Berger also earned the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award as a senior in addition to being a three-year member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

A Prineville, Ore., native, Berger was a four-time state champion at Crook County High School, where he amassed a career record of 198-3. He graduated from Nebraska in May of 2019 with a degree in psychology.
