Jacobson named head wrestling coach at Hunter

NEW YORK -- Director of Athletics Terry Wansart announces the hiring of Pete Jacobson as the head wrestling coach and assistant athletic director. When completing the hiring process, Wansart stated, "He brings a wealth of wrestling and leadership knowledge, along with a 'can-do attitude. As a former NYC firefighter, he demonstrates teamwork, tenacity, safety, and facing the unknown with confidence."

Jacobson will oversee all aspects of the Wrestling program and as an Assistant Athletic Director will be a member of the senior administration team in the Athletic department.

Jacobson spent the last 21 years coaching his alma mater, Edgemont High School, in Westchester County. Over his time with the Panthers, Jacobson built a program from eight student-athletes to over 100 wrestlers each year at the youth, middle school, and high school levels.

His Edgemont teams had significant success over the years with multiple league championships and sectional championships. The Panthers were also selected by the Section 1 Officials as the team of the year for sportsmanship multiple times during his tenure.

When asked about the leadership for the wrestling program, Wansart said, "He also brings two decades of high school coaching experience, with local, regional, and national connections in the wrestling industry, which will serve him and the athletic department well."

When named the Head Coach, Jacobson said, "Being so involved in wrestling throughout the region for the last 30 years, I remember some of the tough Hunter teams from over the years. There's just a ton of potential here. I'm so grateful to Terry Wansart and the search committee for the opportunity to lead Hunter Wrestling forward to new heights. My family and I are excited to be here, and I'm ready to get to work!"

Jacobson has been a multiple-time League Coach of the Year, as well as a LoHud-Journal News Wrestling Coach of the Year. His student-athletes have won a combined 66 All-Section Honors, 29 Sectional Titles, 15 All-State Honors, and three New York State Championships. He has coached several high school All-Americans, and for eight of the last 14 years, one of Jacobson's wrestlers has earned the Section 1 Wrestler of the Year Award. Jacobson was also a member of the FDNY serving as a firefighter and first responder from 2002-2022.

Jacobson and his wife, Katie, have a daughter and a son and live in Yonkers, NY.
