
Ohio State wins season opener at Virginia Tech
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 7 Ohio State (1-0) defeated No. 3 Virginia Tech (0-1) Friday at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Buckeyes got victories from four freshmen, including a pin by Ryder Rogotzke, a true freshman, at 184, to take the Top 10 match from the Hokies, 24-12. Redshirt freshmen Brendan McCrone (125), Luke Geog (197) and Nick Feldman (HWT) also posted wins.
McCrone had the upset of the match with a major decision victory (11-3) over No. 4 Eddie Ventresca in the opening bout of the match.

125 - Brendan McCrone (OSU) def. No. 4 Eddie Ventresca (VT) | MD, 11-3
Ventresca scored first with a takedown for at 3-0 lead. McCrone earned a point with an escape near the end of the first to make it 3-1 Virginia Tech. McCrone made it 3-2 with another escape to start the second. McCrone then got the late takedown and a four-point near fall in the second to make it 9-3 Buckeyes. The redshirt freshman Buckeye kept the pressure up in the third to come away with the upset and the 11-3 win by major decision. McCrone got a point for riding time and another for three cautions called against Ventresca.
133 - No. 7 Sam Latona (VT) def. No. 14 Nic Bouzakis (OSU) | D, 7-5
Latona ended the first period with a takedown to lead 3-0. Bouzakis escaped to start the second to make it 3-1 in favor of the Hokies. Neither wrestler added points the remainder of the second. Latona chose down to open the third and added a point with an escape to make it 4-1. Latona added a take down. Bouzakis added an escape and takedown but Latona won by decision, 7-5.
141 - No. 5 Jesse Mendez (OSU) def. No. 4 Hunter Mason (VT) | TF, 18-3
Mendez opened with a takedown for a 3-0 lead and then made it 9-3 quickly with another pair of takedowns. The period ended with Mendez in the lead 16-3 after another takedown and a four-point near fall. The second period ended with Mendez up 18-3 after a two-point near fall for the win by technical fall, 18-3.
149 - No. 4 Caleb Henson (VT) def. No. 5 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) | D, 10-5
Henson scored first with a takedown but D'Emilio countered and with escapes it was 4-all. Henson scored a late takedown in the first to make it 7-4 heading into the second. Henson escaped to go up 8-4 early in the second. After a point added for stalling, Henson led 9-4 going into the third. With a point for riding time, Henson won by decision, 10-5.
157 - No. 6 Bryce Andonian (VT) def. No. 16 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) | D, 7-4
In a battle of former high school teammates, Andonian scored first after Gallagher nearly had a takedown but did not establish control before Andonian countered for the 3-0 lead to end the first. Andonian added a point for an escape to open the second. Another takedown late in the second made it 7-0 Andonian. Gallagher escaped early in the third and then a late takedown but Andonian got the win by decision 8-4.
165 - Isaac Wilcox (OSU) def. No. 16 Connor Brady (VT) | D, 6-5
Brady got the first points of the match with a takedown two minutes into the first period to lead 3-0. Wilcox escaped late in the first and then again to open the second to make it 3-2 Brady. Wilcox tied it at 3-all when Brady was called for a technical violation for grabbing the edge of the mat with Wilcox working on a takedown just outside the circle. Brady went back on top, 4-3, with an escape early in the third. Wilcox then got the takedown for a 6-5 win by decision after a Brady escape.
174 - No. 3 Mekhi Lewis (VT) def. No. 7 Carson Kharchla (OSU) | D, 4-2
Lewis led after the first period 3-1 with a takedown and Kharchla escape. A Lewis escape to open the second put Virginia Tech up 4-1. Kharchla made a late attack in the second but just could not get control for the takedown to end the period down 4-1. A Kharchla escaped in the third made it 4-2 Hokies and that's where it ended with a Lewis win by decision.
184 - Ryder Rogotzke (OSU) def. No. 21 Sam Fisher (VT) | F, 5:35
Rogotzke ended the first with a double-leg takedown to lead 3-0. Rogotzke added an escape to start the second and then added another double leg takedown for a 7-0 advantage to end the period. Rogotzke then got the win by fall at 5:35.
197 - No. 19 Luke Geog (OSU) def. No. 14 Andy Smith (VT) | D, 11-7
Geog led 7-5 after the first with a pair of takedowns and an escape. Smith escaped but Geog got a quick takedown for a 10-6 lead. Smith escaped again to make it 10-7 Geog heading into the third. Smith chose neutral to open the third but could not add points in an 11-7 win by decision for Geog to clinch the dual for the Buckeyes.
HWT - No. 20 Nick Feldman (OSU) def. No. 16 Hunter Catka (VT) | D, 3-2
There was no score after the first period. Feldman was not able to escape from the down position in the second. Catka, with a riding time point secured, scored first with an escape early in the third but Feldman got the late takedown with under 10 seconds to go to win by decision, 3-2.
