MOORHEAD, Minn. -- MSU Moorhead freshmen Caden Rose (165 pounds) and Quade Peterson (Heavyweight) shined with pins as the Dragons opened up the dual season with a 38-10 demolition of Jamestown.

Things did not begin particularly well for the Dragons as Dane Christopherson (125 points) earned some quick points before falling into a precarious position, getting pinned near the end of the first period. Thomas Carrillo (133 pounds) would fall by major decision in match number two as the Jimmies took hold of the momentum with a 10-0 lead.

Hunter Hayes enlivened the Dragons at 141 pounds, getting MSUM on the scoreboard with a pin of Jamestown's Pedro Corona at 3:33. Hayes struggled in the first period, but was able to rally back and give the Dragons some needed team points. Gunnar Mogen would utilize a riding time point at 149 pounds to put the match into a sudden victory period. The junior would earn a quick takedown of Tommy Beringer in the extra session to pull MSUM closer, 10-9. At 157 pounds, Cody Wienen continued his dominance on the mat, winning by major decision with a riding time point, 13-5.

Head coach Kris Nelson was faced with a decision at 165 pounds. Just minutes before the match was set to commence, usual 165-pounder Jonas Anez suffered a potentially significant leg injury, forcing him to the sidelines. Earlier in the day, Nelson opted to weigh in two 149 pound competitors, Mogen and freshman Caden Rose. Per NCAA rules, teams can opt to move weighed in competitors up in weight class, if they so choose. The 15th-year man Nelson pushed Rose into the 165 pound role against Jamestown's Jahn Williams. Rose battled through a tough first period, trailing on the scoreboard before the Morris, Minn., native came alive in the second frame. While Williams looked to attack, Rose utilized a scintillating underhook move to toss Williams to the mat in a near fall scenario. Rose scratched and clawed to earn a huge pinfall on Williams at 4:31, erupting the Dragon fans. The match helped push the Dragon lead to 19-10.

Wayne Mellon would earn another win to his ledger with a forfeit at 174 pounds, bringing MSUM six more points. Will Price would register a decision win over Diante Taylor at 184 pounds before Isaiah Huus racked up nearly five minutes of riding time in a 10-0 major decision win.

To close the dual, freshman Quade Peterson would utilize some early hand fakes to keep Jamestown's Chance Robinson on his heels. As the first period neared a conclusion, Peterson opted for offense as the two heavyweights were locked up. The St. Paul, Neb., native turned Robinson over and put his shoulders near the mat, pinning Robinson swiftly thereafter. Peterson brought MSUM six more team points and a 38-10 win thanks to a massive effort at the final weight class.
