Cornell puts on dominant performance in win over Sacred Heart
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell Big Red wrestling team took down the Sacred Heart Pioneers 48-3 in its first dual of the season at historic Barton Hall Saturday afternoon. The Big recorded four technical falls, three falls and one major decision in front of an energetic crowd.
"This is something I'll remember," freshman Meyer Shapiro said of the atmosphere at Barton Hall, where Cornell hadn't hosted a dual since 2003. "For it to be my first college dual, that makes it even more special. It was awesome to see how many fans came out today."
125: Sophomore Brett Ungar won by forfeit.
133: Freshman Ethan Qureshi fell 8-7 by decision to Andrew Fallon. Qureshi fell behind 3-1 early but tied it and took a 6-3 lead with a takedown in the second period. Fallon recorded two escapes to make it 6-5 before taking the lead for good with a takedown in the third.
141: Sophomore Vince Cornella beat Vinny Milazzo 3-0 by fall in just over a minute.
149: Junior Ethan Fernandez jumped out to a 6-0 lead over Mike McGhee with a pair of takedowns. He added another takedown later in the match and added on point for riding time, securing the 11-2 major decision.
157: Shapiro, wrestling in his first collegiate dual, dominated his match against Michael Ritacco, jumping out to a 7-0 lead with a near fall and a takedown. He scored four more with another near fall in the second, one with an escape and three with a takedown, securing a 15-0 technical fall.
165: Junior Julian Ramirez recorded a quick takedown and then pinned Scott Jarosz to win by fall in 1:34.
174: Senior Benny Baker took a quick 9-0 lead in his match against Nicky Eboli, scoring on a takedown and a pair of near falls. He scored four more points with another near fall and finished the match in the second period with a mammoth takedown, securing an 18-0 technical fall.
184: Making his debut at 184 pounds, senior Chris Foca, an All-American at 174 last season, beat Logan Michael 10-1 by fall in 47 seconds.
197: Senior Jacob Cardenas scored three with a takedown and four with a near fall en route to an early 7-0 lead over Jake Trovato. He added eight more points with two more near falls, beating Trovato 15-0 by technical fall in 1:21.
285: Senior Lewis Fernandes racked up seven quick points with a takedown and a near fall and won 19-2 by technical fall over Marc Berisha to close the dual.
