Allen crushes Bluefield State, women notch first win

BLUEFIELD, WV -- The Allen University men's wrestling team stormed to an easy 47-6 victory on the road Tuesday at Conference Carolinas foe Bluefield State.

Allen was led by first period falls from junior Eric Cain at 141 lbs and junior Alex Dorce at 174 lbs while fellow senior Christian Poplous had a second period fall at 197 lbs.

Freshman Dharrin Smith then recorded an 18-3 win by technical fall at 157 lbs while sophomore Jordan Bowser won by a 14-7 decision at 184 lbs.

Senior Reco Robinson won a 7-6 thriller in double overtime at 125 lbs while senior Drevon Wallace (149), junior Ya'Donnis Hardaway (165), and freshman Chandler Allen at heavyweight all won via forfeit.

Allen improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference and will next return home to host Florida A&M and Clemson on Saturday at 3:00 from Adams Gym.

WOMEN NOTCH FIRST WIN
The Allen women then opened the dual with a thrilling 20-19 win over Bluefield State to record their first victory in school history.

BSC scored 5 quick points as 116 pounder, freshman Jillian Lackey had to injury default before freshman Lyric Drumgoole tied the match at 5 apiece with a big first period fall at 123 lbs in 2:30. Sophomore Alicia Coleman then won by forfeit at 130 lbs to put AU up 10-5.

BSC then grabbed a 15-10 lead with back to back forfeit wins at 136 and 143 lbs. BSC then thought they had clinched the match as they won by technical fall at 155 lbs over freshman Cathia Timas 15-0. However, the Lady Yellowjackets had an answer with back-to-back falls in the final two weight classes to clinch the win.

Freshman JahMya Hill grabbed a first period fall in 2 minutes to get Allen to within 19-15 before Stephanie Gonzales won by fall in 1:40 to secure the historic win.

The women will next return home to host Florida A&M on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
