Lowerweights ignite Michigan in bounceback win over Rutgers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team, ignited by a hot start at the lowerweights, cruised to a 23-10 win over No. 13 Rutgers on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 21) at Crisler Center. The Wolverines claimed seven total bouts, including a pair of bonus wins and five ranked wins.

Michigan claimed the three opening bouts -- all against top-15 opponents -- to set the tone early in the dual. Graduate student Michael DeAugustino, ranked fifth in the latest InterMat poll, kicked it off with a gritty win at 125 pounds, edging 13th-ranked Dean Peterson 2-1 with 1:51 in riding-time advantage, earned during a second-period rideout.

The next two matches went a little wilder. Senior/junior Dylan Ragusin claimed his second top-10 win on the weekend with an 8-5 comeback decision against eighth-ranked Dylan Shawver at 133 pounds. Ragusin, ranked sixth nationally, evened the score at 3-3 with a late stall point in the second period, then took over early in the third, releasing Shawver then immediately finishing on a double-leg takedown to take his first lead. He rode out the remainder of the bout, picking up a caution point and 1:15 in riding-time advantage to improve to 18-0 on the season. It was his second win in three weeks against the Scarlet Knight.

Freshman Sergio Lemley also rallied to earn a 10-7 overtime decision against 11th-ranked Mitch Moore at 141 pounds -- his highest-ranked win to date. Lemley, ranked 25th nationally, pulled himself back into the match with a second-period go behind then had two winning takedowns taken off the board on review -- late in the third period and in sudden victory. He made no doubt late in the extra frame, after fighting off a deep single from Moore, then finished on one of his own off the subsequent restart -- and with just five seconds left on the clock.

After a Rutgers decision at 149 pounds, graduate student Will Lewan and fifth-year senior Cameron Amine bookended the intermission break with wins to extend the Wolverine lead. Lewan, ranked ninth at 157 pounds, earned a 10-2 major decision over Al DeSantis with three takedowns, including two in the third period and a buzzer-beater high crotch to earn the bonus point. Amine, ranked seventh at 165 pounds, used an overtime single leg to defeat Luke Gayer 4-1.

The teams split the next four bouts, with the Wolverines earning ranked wins from senior/junior Jaden Bullock and graduate student Lucas Davison at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Bullock, ranked 15th nationally, cruised to a 13-3 major decision over 20th-ranked Brian Soldano, setting the tone with a pair of first-period double-leg takedowns before adding two back points -- off a feet-to-back mat return -- and another takedown in the third period. It was Bullock's seventh ranked win on the season.

Davison, ranked fourth at heavyweight, defeated seventh-ranked Yaraslau Slavikouski 4-0 on the strength of a double-leg takedown and rideout in the first period. He added an escape in the second and just missed on riding time (:53). It was Davison's fifth ranked win this season.

The Wolverines (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) will return to the road next Friday (Jan. 26) when they travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face rival Ohio State at 7 p.m. at the Covelli Center. The dual will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
