Michigan closes out dual slate with shutout win at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team pitched a shutout in its dual-meet finale, rolling to a dominant 39-0 win at in-state foe Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25) at the Chippewas' McGuirk Arena. U-M claimed bonus points in six bouts, including each of the first four.

It was the Wolverines' first shutout win since defeating CSU Bakersfield 36-0 on the road last season.

Michigan claimed four straight bonus wins, including three technical falls, to set a dominant tone in the dual. Sophomore/freshman Nolan Wertanen stepped into the lineup and earned a bonus for the second straight dual with a 16-1 tech against Sean Spidle at 125 pounds. Wertanen scored three takedowns and six back points -- on a two-point suck back and four-point tilt in the first period. He ended the bout with a go behind at the 3:28 mark.

Senior/junior Dylan Ragusin, ranked fifth at 133 pounds, also used a big first period en route to a 13-4 major decision against Vince Perez. He scored on three single-leg takedowns and a throw by in the opening frame. Ragusin improved to 22-1 on the season and finished with an 8-1 dual record.

Freshman Sergio Lemley, ranked 10th nationally, rallied from an early deficit to beat Jimmy Nugent 28-10 at 141 pounds. He spotted Nugent six quick points on a single leg and three-point tilt but answered quickly with two takedowns to even the score after the first. He scored two takedowns and a four-point leg turk in each of the second and third periods to end the match early at 4:48.

Graduate student Austin Gomez, ranked fifth at 149 pounds, also rolled to tech fall in the next match, beating Trenton Wachter 21-6 with seven takedowns -- three in the first period and two apiece in the second and third. He scored several single-leg attacks off underhooks and snap downs, then transitioned a single to double to end the match at the 6:01 mark.

Michigan claimed back-to-back overtime wins at 157 and 165 pounds. Graduate student Will Lewan, ranked 15th at 157, edged 26th-ranked Johnny Lovett 2-2 on five seconds of riding time in the tiebreaker, while fifth-year senior Cameron Amine, ranked 10th at 165, finished on a sudden-victory single leg earned a 4-1 decision against Tyler Swiderski.

Senior/junior Joseph Walker earned his second dual win at 174 pounds with a 4-1 decision against Chandler Amaker at 174 pounds. Walker scored the winning takedown at the second-period buzzer, shooting in on a single leg before circling around to finish with just :01 on the clock. He added an escape in the third and scooted out of a deep CMU single leg to hang on for the win.

Senior/junior Jaden Bullock, ranked 18th nationally, cruised to a 15-4 major decision against Adrien Cramer at 184 pounds. Bullock scored two takedowns apiece in the first and third periods, finishing on a double leg on the edge late in the waning seconds of the bout to secure the bonus win. He also added a late stall point and rode for 1:22.

Graduate student Bobby Striggow earned an 8-1 major decision against Cameron Wood at 197 pounds in his first collegiate dual, scoring on a double leg in the first, riding for nearly the entire second period and icing the bout with a single leg late in the third. He accumulated 1:34 in time advantage.

Graduate student Lucas Davison, ranked sixth at heavyweight, put an exclamation point on the shutout win with a 16-3 major decision against Bryan Caves in the final bout. Davison, also in his final collegiate dual, built a big early lead with two first-period takeowns, including a feet-to-back throw from double under for seven points, then added a second-period single and a reversal and 4:02 in riding time in the third.
