Starocci, Brooks win fourth NCAA titles, PSU breaks scoring record

KANSAS CITY -- History was made by Penn State on Saturday night in Kansas City.

The Nittany Lions -- on the strength of four NCAA champions, six national finalists and eight All-Americans -- broke the NCAA tournament scoring record at the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.

Penn State finished with 172.5 points, breaking Iowa's scoring record of 170 set in 1997. In addition, the Nittany Lions finished with the highest margin of victory ever in NCAA Division I wrestling, outdistancing runner-up Cornell by exactly 100 points. Michigan was third with 71 points, while Iowa State (68.5) and Iowa (67) rounded out the top five.

It was Penn State 11th national team title in 13 years. Despite the program records, Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson was already looking ahead to the future.

"Time to get ready for next year," Sanderson said after the tournament. "That's what we do. We're always thinking ahead preparing for the future. We'll be back in the room on Monday. We love what we do. We love training. We love the sport of wrestling. I'm happy for the guys."

Carter Starocci (174) and Aaron Brooks (197) joined the most prestigous club in college wrestling, becoming four-time NCAA Division I champions. The Penn State stars became the sixth and seventh wrestlers respectively to become four-time NCAA Division I champions and the first two for Penn State. One of the members of the club is Cael Sanderson, who accomplished feat exactly 20 years ago to the day. Other four-time champion include Pat Smith, Kyle Dake, Logan Stieber and Yianni Diakomihalis.

"Obviously in situations with like Carter and Aaron, the pressure mounts," said Sanderson, who went 159-0 and won four NCAA titles at Iowa State. "They both are competitors. That's what they live for. That's what they were born for. Just happy for them."

Penn State's other NCAA champions crowned on Saturday night were Levi Haines (157) and Greg Kerkvliet (285).

Starocci, who entered the tournament as a head-scratching No. 9 seed after injury defaulting twice at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships, claimed his fourth national title with a 2-0 win over true freshman Rocco Welsh of Ohio State. Starocci scored his first point off a second stalling call in the first period and escaped in the second period.

For Starocci, who overcame adversity after suffering an injury in his last match of the regular season, called the title "bittersweet."

"I think it's bittersweet just realizing, like, dang, I'm already a senior. That was my last folkstyle match. It's hard to process all that when you're in the storm."

He plans to compete at the Olympic Team Trials next month at 74 kilograms.

Brooks handled NC State's Trent Hidlay 6-1 in the finals at 197 pounds. He fired off a shot late in the first period, lifting Hidlay and securing a takedown to go up 3-0 after the first period. Brooks extended his lead to 5-0 in the second period after an escape and point off stalling. He would add a riding-time point to close out his scoring.

He was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the event. Brooks was happy to win his fourth title alongside his teammate and fellow four-time NCAA champion Starocci.

"Having someone else to be a part of that journey and do it with was a lot of fun," said Brooks. "We're blessed."

Haines, the No. 1 seed, came through to win the title at 157 with a 5-0 shutout over Arizona State's Jacori Teemer. Haines led 1-0 in the third period before getting a takedown and ride-out to close out the match. It was the second NCAA finals appearance in two seasons for Haines after he fell in the finals last season as a true freshman.

"Obviously, everybody wants to win, so losing last year may have been one of the best things that ever happened to me," said Haines. "In the moment it wasn't like that. I think I'm just more proud of this year because I just went out and competed free. I wasn't worried about losing. That just means a lot more to me than winning or losing."

Kerkvliet was dominant in claiming a 13-4 victory over Michigan's Lucas Davison in the finals at 285 pounds. Like Haines, Kerkvliet lost in the finals a year ago. This season he went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 heavyweight, finishing the season 20-0 and becoming a four-time All-American. He placed seventh at the NCAAs in 2021, fourth in 2022 and runner-up last season.

"I think those previous years just make this that much better for me," said Kerkvliet. "It just feels good."

At 165 pounds, Iowa State's David Carr closed out his Cyclone career by winning his second NCAA title in his third finals appearance. He became the first five-time All-American in Iowa State wrestling history and finished with a career record of 120-5.

"It feels awesome," said Carr. "It feels amazing to end my career on top."

A day after knocking off returning NCAA champion Keegan O'Toole of Missouri, Carr won a 9-8 thriller over previously unbeaten freshman Mitchell Mesenbrink of Penn State. Carr started quickly, firing off a double leg in the opening moments of the match to secure a takedown. He then rode hard, accumulating over a minute of riding time. After getting an escape, Carr added another takedown. Mesenbrink kept the pressure on. Carr was called twice for stalling, giving Mesenbrink a point after the second call. Carr took a 7-3 lead into the final period. Mesenbrink chose the down position and Carr was hit for another stalling call while trying to ride before giving up an escape. The Penn State freshman then scored a takedown before cutting Carr loose, which made the score 8-8 on the scoreboard. But Carr had a riding-time advantage over a minute, which gave him the one-point victory.

Carr's father Nate was a three-time NCAA champion for Iowa State and an Olympic bronze medalist. His brother Nate Jr. also wrestled for the Cyclones. So where does David rank among the Carrs?

"My dad has three national titles so I'll be right next to him," said Carr. He was also in the Olympics and got bronze. I've got a lot of shoes to fill. This is just what was expected by my family. It's a hard ask but being part of the Carr legacy is tough."

Northern Iowa's Parker Keckeisen moved up a step on the podium, winning the NCAA title at 184 pounds after finishing as an NCAA runner-up last season to Brooks. He dominated Oklahoma State's Dustin Plott 14-5 in the finals. It was Keckeisen's third win over Plott this season. The Wisconsin native earned bonus-point victories in all five of his wins at the NCAAs and capped off an undefeated season.

"(Coach Lee) Roper told me my offense is better than his defense," said Keckeisen. "Just trying to to legs. The amount of finish work we've done is a lot. Get to where we're good at. That was the gameplan."

Arizona State crowned its first NCAA champion since 2019 with Richard Figueroa winning the title at 125 pounds from the No. 8 seed. He topped Iowa's Drake Ayala 7-2 in the finals. After a scoreless opening period, Figueroa scored a takedown in each of the final two periods to pace him to the victory.

"It was a tough one," said Figueroa. "We wrestled against each other at least like two times. It's a battle. I know it's always going to be a battle with him. It's just whoever comes prepared, and today I was prepared."

Cornell's Vito Arujau repeated as NCAA champion at 133 pounds, defeating four-time NCAA finalist Daton Fix 5-3 in a finals match that lasted 21 minutes long and included multiple challenges and stoppages.

After a scoreless opening period that included the wrestlers bumping heads and Arujau suffering a head injury, Fix grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second period after an escape and a locked-hands call. Arujau nearly had a takedown in the middle of the second period but video review deemed it no takedown. Arujau escaped in the third period and nearly had a takedown but picked up a stalling point to make the match 2-2. He kept the pressure on Fix and eventually scored a takedown to go up 5-2. Fix would escape with just under a minute remaining but Arujau held on for the win.

"That was a doozy, partially because I'm still a little dizzy from that," said Arujau, a world champion in freestyle. "I think I was really sluggish off the start, a little lackadaisical. And I think that maybe partially led to the early injury that I got. We both just bumped heads."

Caleb Henson won the title at 149 pounds, becoming the second Virginia Tech wrestler win a national title, joining teammate Mekhi Lewis, who won the 165-pound title in 2019.

Henson, a Georgia native, fell behind early to Michigan's Austin Gomez but eventually cruised to a 15-7 major decision. ACC wrestlers have now won 23 NCAA titles and four since 2021.

"It was a lot of fun out there," said Henson. "I was just grateful to compete in such an amazing arena. To have the health and the focus and the clarity to get it done was truly a blessing. It was just a lot of fun out there."

Top-seeded Jesse Mendez of Ohio State won the NCAA title at 141 pounds, defeating Big Ten rival Beau Bartlett of Penn State 4-1 in the finals. After a scoreless first period, the wrestlers traded escapes in the second and third periods to make it 1-1. Late in the match, Bartlett was in deep on a shot and nearly scored a takedown before Mendez scrambled out and secured the match-winning takedown. Mendez becomes Ohio State's first NCAA champion since Kyle Snyder won his third title in 2018.

"I knew this match wasn't going to be settled on the mat," said Mendez. "We're both pretty good on bottom. Just finding that one score. It got real close at the end. But I want it too bad. I want it too bad to give it up. I almost got taken down but kept wrestling and ended up getting the takedown later in the third period."

Penn State goes 6-0 in semifinals, clinches team title with one day remaining

Penn State went a perfect 6-0 in Friday's night semifinal round at the 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships at T-Mobile Center in Kanas City. The Nittany Lions clinched the team title before the final day of competition. Reaching the finals for Penn State were Beau Bartlett (141), Levi Haines (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Carter Starocci (174), Aaron Brooks (197) and Greg Kerkvliet (285). Starocci and Brooks will be wrestling for their fourth NCAA titles. Penn State has amassed 148 points and leads the team race by 83.5 points. Michigan sits in second place with 64.5 points. Iowa is in third place with 60 points. Arizona State and Iowa State are tied for fourth place with 59.5 points. Penn State is 23 points away from breaking the tournament scoring record set by Iowa in 1997.

"We obviously want to win as a team but our goal is to see our kids be happy and reach their goals," said Penn State head wrestling coach Cael Sanderson. "That's why we do what we do."

In one of the most anticipated matchups of the semifinal round, Iowa State's David Carr battled back to defeat Keegan O'Toole of Missouri in a rematch of last year's NCAA championship match at 165 pounds. Carr, a 2021 NCAA champion and three-time NCAA finalist, scored a late takedown to win 8-6 over the two-time NCAA champion O'Toole. It was the fifth meeting between the two, with Carr winning three of them.

"It was a great rivalry, " said Carr. "Some of the biggest moments I've wrestled him in ... in the Big 12 finals, the NCAA finals. We have traded (wins) a few times. He's beaten me a few times. I've beaten him a few times. That match meant a lot. He's a good competitor. He trains hard."

Cornell's Vito Arujau is looking to repeat as champion at 133 pounds. He reached the finals with a dominant 13-3 victory over Lehigh freshman Ryan Crookham. He will face Oklahoma State's Daton Fix in the finals. Fix is a three-time NCAA runner-up and NCAA fourth-place finisher last season. Arujau defeated Fix 11-3 in the NCAA semifinals a year ago.

"Coming into this match, it was a lot of just trying to do what I do best ... and that is to allow the wrestling to happen," said Arujau. "Don't force. Don't be scared. Don't think. Just go out there and wrestle in an aggressive manner. Stay on it. Work through positions. These are all things I do very well and is what led to my success last year at NCAAs, at the World Championship, and now again today and hopefully tomorrow as well."

Iowa kept its streak alive of having a national finalist every year since 1990. Third-seeded Drake Ayala secured a spot in the finals at 125 pounds to make it 34 consecutive years the Hawkeyes have had a national finalist. He will beat Arizona State's Richard Figueroa in the finals. Michigan has a pair of finalists in Austin Gomez (149) and Lucas Davison (285).

Six of the 10 No. 1 seeds advanced to the finals.

Saturday's first session is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. ET.
