Chun honored as NCAA Women's Coach of the Year

The Open Mat presents awards annually in three categories for each division of college wrestling at the conclusion of the season. Awards are presented for Freshman of the Year, Coach of the Year and Wrestler of the Year.

Iowa women's head wrestling coach Clarissa Chun has been honored as the 2024 NCAA Women's Coach of the Year by The Open Mat. The award comes after Chun was announced as the USA Wrestling Coach of the Year and NWCA Coach of the Year.

The Iowa women's wrestling team capped off a historic season by winning the national team title in their inaugural season of competition.

Chun, a world champion and Olympic medalist, guided the Hawkeyes to a perfect 16-0 record in dual meet competition, including a 5-0 mark at home. The Hawkeyes shattered the world attendance record for women's wrestling at their first dual at Carver-Hawkeye Arena

Iowa went undefeated at the Desert Duals in December. In January, the Hawkeyes won the team title at the NWCA National Duals with a 21-20 victory over North Central.

The Hawkeyes carried that momentum into the postseason, winning the Region V title, crowning six champions, advancing 11 wrestlers in the finals and qualifying 15 wrestlers for the NCWWC Nationals.

Two weeks later, Iowa captured the national team title its first season of competition on the strength of six national champions and 12 All-Americans.
