Ryan inks contract extension at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Tom Ryan, one of the most successful coaches in Ohio State history, signed a three-year extension that will keep the New York native in Columbus through at least the 2027 season, Carly Grimshaw Rusnov, senior associate athletics director for compliance and the sport administrator for wrestling, announced Friday.

"We are excited to announce Tom has accepted a contract extension to continue leading our wrestling program," Grimshaw Rusnov, said. "Tom is an exceptional leader and has demonstrated a strong commitment to our student-athletes, both on and off the mat. This extension is well deserved and we are confident that Tom's vision for the program will continue to elevate Buckeye wrestling in the future."

Ryan, now in his 19th season in Columbus, is equally optimistic about what the future has in store for Ohio State's wrestling program.

"Columbus is a special city and the Ohio State Athletics Department brings a sense of community, connection and pride," Ryan said. "It has been a blessing for my wife and me to raise our children here and to be given the sustained trust in building a championship wrestling program.

"We are grateful for the support of the administrative leadership, deep rooted relationships with supporters, passionate fan base and an elite staff of co-wrestling coaches," Ryan said. "We are optimistic about the future of Ohio State wrestling. Thank you Buckeye Nation."

Ryan, a member of both the Hofstra and Ohio State Halls of Fame, guided the Buckeyes to the NCAA team title in 2015 and has finished among the Top 5 nationally nine times. In the rugged Big Ten Conference, Ryan's teams own three regular-season titles with six Top 3 finishes.

For his career as a head coach, which includes a stint at Hofstra (1996-2006), Ryan has guided teams to 322 dual victories, including 213 wins at Ohio State (2007-present).

No previous Ohio State coach has produced more All-Americans (73), Big Ten champions (26) or NCAA individual champions (13).

The Buckeyes have been equally successful in the academic arena with 41 Big Ten Distinguished Scholars and numerous Academic All-Big Ten honorees. Ohio State wrestlers own 26 first team All-Big Ten honors as well under Ryan's guidance.
