All-American Alvarez commits to Iowa

All-American Sammy Alvarez could soon be competing for his fourth college wrestling team, if he is granted another season of eligibility by the NCAA.

Alvarez announced on social media that he has committed to Iowa. He was an All-American last season at Rider, placing seventh at 149 pounds. Alvarez started his college career at Rutgers, where he competed for four years before transferring to Oklahoma State for a season before eventually landing at Rider for the 2024-25 season.

Iowa has been busy in the transfer portal this offseason, adding several notable wrestlers, including Nasir Bailey (Little Rock), Jordan Williams (Little Rock), and Massoma Endene (Wartburg), Dean Peterson (Rutgers) and now Alvarez.

Alvarez finished this past season with a 25-7 record. He was named MAC Wrestler of the Year.
