Simcoe steps down as Grand Valley State men's head wrestling coach
Grand Valley State athletics announced today that third-year head men's wrestling coach Joey Simcoe has stepped down from his post. A search for his replacement will begin immediately.
"Joey made several contributions to our wrestling program in a very short period of time, and we have a solid foundation to build from and will be able to continue our growth as a varsity sport," said Director of Athletics Keri Becker.
Grand Valley State finished 13th and 14th at the NCAA Division II National Championships during his two-year tenure competing as a varsity sport with eight NCAA DII All-Americans.
"This is the right time to step back and take inventory of what I want for the next phase of my career," said Simcoe. "I want to be a dad and enjoy our son's wrestling career without having to be a coach. We can also get back to our home base and take advantage of some opportunities. We did a lot of great things at Grand Valley State to get the wrestling program off the ground and working towards a top-level Division II team."
Dr. Kurt Patberg of Mammoth Sports Consulting will be assisting Grand Valley State with this search.
