NCAA women's wrestling championship format approved

The format for the inaugural NCAA women's wrestling championship has been approved.

All three NCAA divisions, Division I, Division II and Division III, will compete together in the inaugural NCAA women's championship event. The field will be comprised of 180 competitors across 10 weight classes (18 wrestlers per weight class). The NCAA Women's Wrestling Committee's recommendation of 210 qualifiers and seven regionals was denied.

Six regionals will be held, with the top three placers qualifying for the NCAA women's championship, which will take place two weeks after the regionals. NCAA women's wrestling programs can send a maximum of 10 wrestlers to the postseason.

The 2026 NCAA women's wrestling championship event will be held March 6-7 at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. The University of Iowa and the Iowa City Area Sports Commission will serve as co-hosts.
