Clothier added to Army West Point coaching staff
WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Army West Point Class of 1972 Head Men's Wrestling Coach Troy Nickerson has announced the hiring of Alan Clothier to the Army Wrestling coaching staff.
Clothier comes to West Point from Davidson College, where he spent the 2024-25 season.
"Clothier is the perfect addition to our already world class coaching staff," said Nickerson. "His values mirror what we are looking to produce out of our cadet-athletes, and I am confident that his impact will show immediate impact on our cadets."
"I'm excited to join Nickerson and the Army West Point wrestling program," said Clothier. "This is a great opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the cadet-athletes and witness growth on the wrestling mat. I look forward to being a part of the development of this program and helping shape its future success."
At Davidson, Clothier was the lead assistant for weight classes 165 through 285, creating practice plans and running individual practices with the five upper weight classes, while also wrestling in practice.
In 2024-25, the Wildcats came within one point of knocking off ACC foe Duke in a December 6 dual in Durham, N.C.
Before Davidson, Clothier spent two seasons on staff at Buffalo, being promoted from volunteer assistant to assistant coach before the 2023-24 season.
With the Bulls, Clothier was responsible for coaching and mentoring weight classes 165 through 285, leading practices and demonstrating skills and drills. He also was responsible for recruiting those five weight classes.
Clothier helped lead Buffalo to winning dual records vs. MAC squads in both years with the program. In 2023-24, eight Bulls placed at the MAC Championships, while two wrestlers— Nick Stampoulos (157 lbs) and Sam Mitchell (197 lbs)—qualified for the NCAA Championships in Kansas City, Mo.
A season earlier, Clothier helped guide Giuseppe Hoose to an NCAA Championships appearance in Tulsa, Okla. At 184 lbs, after six Bulls placed at the 2023 MAC Championships.
Clothier entered coaching as a volunteer wrestling coach at Greeley Central High School for the 2021-22 season, while he finished his collegiate wrestling career.
The native of Lawrence, Kan. spent three seasons wrestling at Northern Colorado under Nickerson. Before arriving at the Big 12 program, Clothier wrestled three seasons at Appalachian State.
He finished his collegiate career as a four-time NCAA Championships qualifier, a three-time NCAA Division I Scholar All-American, a five-time conference placer and two-time All-Big 12 Academic First Team member. Before his college career begun at Appalachian State, Clothier won two Kansas state titles at Lawrence High School and was a two-time high school All-American.
Clothier rounds out Nickerson's staff, with associate head coach Scott Green, assistant coach Steve Bleise and director of wrestling development Jeff Breese each being retained.
