All-American Smith commits to Ohio State

Jaxon Smith, an NCAA All-American who began his collegiate career at Maryland, will finish his career at Ohio State. He announced his commitment to the Buckeyes on Monday after entering the transfer portal.

Smith leaves Maryland as one of the program's most accomplished wrestlers in recent years. He compiled a 91-12 career record, qualified for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships three times, and earned All-America honors in 2025 with a sixth-place finish at 184 pounds. As a redshirt freshman, he reached the round of 12 and placed third at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships.

Following his All-American season, Smith was selected to compete in the 2025 NWCA All-Star Classic. He competed early in the season before his year was cut short by injury. In January, Smith took a medical redshirt after suffering an ankle injury, preserving his final season of eligibility. He is expected to compete at 174 pounds in 2026-27.

The Buckeyes are coming off a 2025-26 season in which they won the National Duals Invitational and placed fifth at the 2026 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
