Purdue signs NJCAA national champ Richens

The Purdue Boilermakers have added a key piece to their roster with the signing of junior college standout Austin Richens.

Richens arrives in West Lafayette following a dominant two-year run at Northwest College, where he capped his sophomore campaign by winning the 2026 NJCAA national title at 285 pounds. His performance at the national tournament earned him Outstanding Wrestler honors, and he was later recognized as the top junior college male athlete in the country with the David Rowlands Award.

With a 49-4 collegiate record, Richens has established himself as one of the most accomplished heavyweights in the junior college ranks. He also made history as just the second wrestler ever to receive the David Rowlands Award, one of the highest honors in JUCO athletics.

Before moving up to heavyweight, Richens showed his versatility by placing third at 197 pounds at the 2025 NJCAA Championships, earning All-American honors. He leaves Northwest College as a two-time NJCAA All-American.

A native of Utah, Richens built his foundation at Uintah High School, where he captured two state titles and earned All-American recognition at the high school level.

Richens is expected to step into a significant role for Purdue as the program looks to replace graduating heavyweight Hayden Filipovich. He will arrive with at least two remaining years of eligibility.

His addition strengthens an already impressive 2026 recruiting class for Purdue, which was ranked No. 13 nationally by FloWrestling. The Boilermakers have now secured a top-15 recruiting class in three of the past four cycles.

Purdue's recent recruiting success has also translated to national depth. Along with Nebraska, the Boilermakers lead the Big Ten with 14 top-250 signees over the past two recruiting classes, further signaling the program's upward trajectory.
