Newberry names Wainwright permanent head women's coach
Newberry College has removed the interim tag from Cy Wainwright, naming him the permanent head coach of the women's wrestling program. The school also announced the addition of Jacob Brasseur as associate head coach.
Wainwright, a former national champion wrestler at Newberry, previously served as the Wolves' head men's wrestling coach before stepping into the interim role with the women's program. In addition to his coaching duties, Wainwright serves as a sports management professor on campus. His transition from interim to permanent head coach signals stability for a program that has built momentum under his watch over the past seven weeks.
Brasseur comes to Newberry from Lexington High School in South Carolina, where he served as both assistant and head coach. A five-year member of the wrestling program at Presbyterian College and an Academic All-American, Brasseur played a key role in developing Lexington's program, including expanding women's wrestling, growing participation numbers and producing state-level competitors. In his role as associate head coach, Brasseur will focus on recruiting, athlete development and day-to-day operations.
The additions mark a significant step forward for Newberry women's wrestling as the program looks to build on its foundation and compete at a high level nationally.
