PSAC adds women's wrestling as 24th championship sport
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has announced that women's wrestling will become its 24th championship sport beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. The PSAC Board of Directors approved the addition during its annual meeting in May.
Five PSAC institutions currently field women's wrestling programs -- East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Gannon, Lock Haven and Pitt-Johnstown. D'Youville and Felician will join as associate members for women's wrestling, with Lackawanna College expected to join as a full member in the near future. Teams will compete in a round-robin dual meet schedule, with the program posting the best record named dual meet champions.
The addition brings the conference's total championship sports to 24, with 11 men's and 13 women's sports. Women's wrestling will also be included in the PSAC's awards program, with annual Athlete of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year honors, along with All-Conference Teams named at the conclusion of each season.
The announcement comes on the heels of a landmark year for the sport. The NCAA approved women's wrestling as its 91st championship sport in January 2025 and held its inaugural NCAA Championship in March 2026, featuring competitors from all three divisions. Pennsylvania is well-positioned to contribute to the sport's growth at the college level, with 271 high school women's wrestling programs across the state and the number continuing to climb.
