Workinger named head women's wrestling coach at Big Bend

Big Bend Community College has named Shannon Workinger as head coach of its women's wrestling program.

Workinger is a Quincy, Washington native who became the first female state champion in Quincy High School history. She went on to wrestle at Menlo College, where she was a two-time collegiate All-American and helped the program win a national championship. She transferred to Evergreen State College -- the only four-year school in Washington that offers wrestling -- where she redshirted her junior year due to injury before becoming the program's first national finalist as a senior, finishing her collegiate career as a three-time NAIA All-American. She was named an Academic All-American, served as a team captain and received the program's lifetime achievement award.

On the international stage, Workinger won a gold medal for Team USA at the U20 Pan American Games in Peru and is a regular attendee at camps at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Workinger currently serves on staff for the Washington girls high school national team, traveling with them to Fargo each July, and has coached numerous camps and clinics across the region.

At Big Bend, Workinger will look to build on the foundation established by her predecessors, including former coach Desiree Zavala, as the Vikings women's wrestling program continues to grow. The Columbia Basin is home for Workinger, and she returns with the goal of developing the next generation of women wrestlers in the region.
