NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships returning to Coralville
Coralville, Iowa, is keeping women's college wrestling's biggest weekend.
The Iowa City Area Sports Commission announced Wednesday that the 2027 NCAA Women's Wrestling Championships will return to Xtream Arena on March 5-6. The University of Iowa and the Iowa City Area Sports Commission will return as co-hosts.
Xtream Arena has hosted the collegiate women's wrestling finals since the NCWWC relocated from Cedar Rapids to Coralville following the 2024 championships, extending the venue's run to a third consecutive year. The arena delivered in its NCAA debut in March 2026, when McKendree edged Iowa 171-166 for the inaugural NCAA title in a finish that came down to the final bouts of the night. North Central (Illinois) finished third with 123.5 points and Grand Valley State was fourth with 110.5.
The 2027 championship features 180 qualifiers across 10 weight classes: 103, 110, 117, 124, 131, 138, 145, 160, 180 and 207 pounds. Six regional tournaments determine the field, with the top three finishers at each weight advancing to nationals and creating an 18-wrestler bracket at every weight class.
The sport's growth since joining the NCAA has been steep. In 2024-25, 95 NCAA schools reported sponsoring women's wrestling with more than 1,700 student-athletes competing, up from 76 schools and roughly 1,200 athletes just a year earlier. Division III will launch its own women's wrestling championship in 2028, meaning the 2027 edition in Coralville could be among the last to feature all three divisions competing under one roof.
McKendree returns to Coralville as the reigning champion. Iowa will look to claim the first NCAA title in front of its home crowd. Tickets and additional event details will be announced at a later date.
