Sponseller resigns after six seasons as Ashland head wrestling coach
Colt Sponseller has resigned as head wrestling coach at Ashland University after six seasons to join his family's business, the school announced.
Sponseller guided the Eagles to five Great Midwest Athletic Conference championships in six seasons, beginning with the 2020-21 academic year. In his first season, Ashland placed seventh at the NCAA Division II Championships. Over his tenure, the Eagles produced nine Division II All-Americans and qualified between four and eight wrestlers for the NCAA Division II Championships in each of his six seasons.
Before arriving at Ashland, Sponseller spent five seasons as an assistant at Ohio University, where he coached 19 NCAA qualifiers, one Mid-American Conference champion and one NCAA All-American. He began his coaching career at Edinboro from 2012-15, where he was part of a program that finished third and fifth nationally and coached 18 PSAC champions, 10 EWL champions, 12 NCAA qualifiers and nine NCAA All-Americans.
As a competitor at Ohio State, Sponseller was a Division I All-American, placing fourth at 165 pounds in 2011, and earned Academic All-American honors in 2010-11. He finished his collegiate career with a 105-24 record and placed fifth at the 2015 world team trials.
Ashland will begin a search for Sponseller's successor.
