Kean University has named Barry Hart as head women's wrestling coach, the school announced.
Hart comes to Kean after six seasons at New Jersey City University, where he spent two years as the top assistant before serving four seasons as head coach. During his tenure leading the NJCU program, Hart's teams were consistently ranked in the top 20 nationally by the NWCA, reaching as high as No. 9 in 2023-24. He produced two NCWWC regional champions, two NCWWC All-Americans and one NCWWC national champion in Sandy Guerrero, who was also named the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler in 2023-24. As an assistant, Hart helped the program earn three All-American honors and six NCWWC qualifiers.
Before his time at NJCU, Hart spent nearly a decade with Beat the Streets in New York in various capacities beginning in 2013, including as head boys coach from September 2020 to June 2022. He was named BTS Assistant Coach of the Year in 2019. During his time with the organization, his programs produced two All-Americans, four New York state freestyle champions, a Greco state champion, 10 state placers, four PSAL champions and 21 PSAL placers. His teams claimed five runner-up finishes over a four-year span from 2017-20 and won two championships — the 2018 PSAL Girls Individual Freestyle Team title and the 2018 Gotham City Girls Open. Hart also served as a high school assistant at Wingate Educational Campus in Brooklyn from 2016-19, where the program went 40-21 and won the 2019 Blended 2 Division Championship and the 2017 Girls Brooklyn Division title.
As a competitor, Hart wrestled at 149 pounds for two seasons at Hunter College from 2014-16 after spending two years at Niagara County Community College, where he earned NJCAA All-Academic team recognition. He is a 2017 graduate of Hunter College. A Brooklyn native, Hart currently resides in Jersey City.
