Springfield College is adding women's wrestling as a varsity sport, director of athletics Dr. Craig Poisson announced. The program will begin competition in the 2027-28 academic year, and a national search for a head coach will begin immediately.

Women's wrestling becomes the first varsity sport added at Springfield College since 1980, expanding the college's athletics offerings to 27 sports. According to the Women's Collegiate Wrestling Coalition, Springfield is the 133rd NCAA institution to offer women's wrestling and the 82nd Division III program, joining 10 Division I and 42 Division II programs nationally.

Springfield will be just the third program in Massachusetts to sponsor varsity women's wrestling, joining Western New England University in Springfield and Emmanuel College in Boston, and only the fifth in the New England region, joining Maine Maritime, New England College and Norwich.

The addition comes as women's wrestling continues to be one of the fastest-growing collegiate sports in the country. The NCAA declared women's wrestling its 91st championship sport in January 2025 and hosted the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling Championship in March 2026.
