Iowa incoming freshman Whiting remains alive at U20 Worlds
Iowa incoming freshman Taylor Whiting remains alive at the 2026 U20 World Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia, after the opening day of the women's wrestling competition. Colorado Mesa's Gretchen Donally was eliminated from the tournament.
Also competing on the opening day, uncommitted Class of 2026 wrestler Morgan Turner -- a two-time U17 world champion and 2026 senior world team member -- won her opening match before losing to Japan's Yuu Katsume by technical superiority. Turner will compete in Wednesday's repechage.
Whiting, a four-time Wisconsin state champion, lost by fall to U17 world champion Kaura Coles of Canada in the round of 16 at 53 kilograms. However, Whiting advanced to Wednesday's repechage after Coles reached the finals.
Whiting struck first against Coles, driving a single leg out of bounds for a step-out to lead 1-0. Coles answered with a two-on-one takedown on the edge of the mat to take a 2-1 lead. A blood time stoppage briefly halted the action, and Coles kept rolling once it resumed, countering a Whiting single leg to go up 4-1 with just over a minute left in the first period before adding another takedown off a Whiting shot attempt to make it 6-1. Coles wasted little time in the second period, scoring an early takedown before transitioning to a bar arm and securing the fall.
Donally, a U20 Pan American Games gold medalist, fell 4-3 to Khrystyna Demchuk of Ukraine in the quarterfinals at 72 kilograms. The Colorado Mesa wrestler opened the scoring with a step-out to lead 1-0 before Demchuk took the lead off an exposure. Donally countered Demchuk's arm spin for a takedown with just under two minutes remaining to go up 3-2, but Demchuk retook the lead with a snap and go-behind takedown with 34 seconds left and held on for the one-point victory. Donally was eliminated when Demchuk was defeated in the semifinals.
A pair of Iowa wrestlers, Everest Leydecker (55 kilograms) and Bella Williams (62 kilograms), will begin their competitions on Wednesday. Leydecker is a returning U20 world champion. In addition, Iowa State's Piper Fowler (76 kilograms) and Class of 2027 Wisconsin wrestler Riley Hanrahan (65 kilograms) will compete on Wednesday.
