Gordon named head wrestling coach at Ashland

Marcus Gordon is returning to Ashland University as head wrestling coach, director of athletics Al King announced Tuesday. Gordon, a former AU wrestler and assistant coach, becomes the 11th head coach in program history.

Gordon takes over a program that won five Great Midwest Athletic Conference championships in six seasons under Colt Sponseller. He inherits a roster with high expectations and brings extensive head coaching experience to the role, having led Bloomsburg -- an NCAA Division I program and associate member of the Mid-American Conference -- from 2016-24. That followed three seasons as an assistant at Bloomsburg from 2013-16. His Bloomsburg teams were ranked eighth in Division I in team GPA in 2020-21.

Before his time at Bloomsburg, Gordon served as an assistant at Ashland from 2008-13 under head coach Tim Dernlan. During that stretch, the Eagles placed in the top 20 in NCAA Division II three consecutive years -- 20th in 2011, 13th in 2012 and tied for 15th in 2013. Gordon served as recruiting coordinator for some of the top classes in Division II, including the class ranked No. 1 in 2009. His assistant tenure at Ashland produced nine All-Americans, 26 national qualifiers and 25 NWCA Academic All-America honors.

A north central Ohio native, Gordon was a standout prep wrestler at nearby Mapleton High School, where he was a two-time Ohio state champion, three-time state finalist, four-time state placer and the MVP of the state meet. He ranks eighth in Ohio prep wrestling history with 866 career takedowns and was inducted into the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.

As a collegiate wrestler, Gordon began his career as a two-year starter at Eastern Michigan before finishing as a four-year starter overall at Ashland, becoming a two-time NCAA national qualifier and two NWCA Academic All-American.
